On Monday I went over to my dad's place and had a thanksgiving dinner with him, my step-mom and my brother. I actually had a totally different outfit on before I went out- but you know when you have to keep adjusting things, even if it looks good you know that you are going to be uncomfortable. I think I realized how much I enjoy outfits that I can just throw together, whether dressy or casual and just have it work without having to fuss around with it.

I absolutely love the top I'm wearing- I actually have one in grey too. It's the perfect combo of soft and slouchy; I think I wore it every day last fall!

I made a quick stop at Value Village on the way to my dad's place- I picked up a cool red&black printed sweater, and some awesome flat leather boots.

Happy Thanksgiving to all those Canadians out there! Yesterday I went out for Thanksgiving dinner at White Spot with my mom's side of the family- today I'm heading over to my dad's house for another turkey dinner. I love turkey but my FAVORITE thing is MASHED POTATOES! I think that I'm obsessed with potatoes in general (french fries, scalloped, potato skins, etc etc). Must be the irish in me.

Here is what I wore yesterday:

Yesterday was actually a whirlwind day, as I was in Toronto in the morning, hopped a flight back home to Vancouver and then headed to dinner shortly after I got back. I was in Toronto for a week visiting my aunt and my friend Krista. It was nice to get away for a bit!

Tonight I went out with a group of friends and saw "The Lion King" in 3D. It was great! I wish singing along had been encouraged, because I remembered all the words... I could have done without the 3D though, it didn't really add too much to the movie.

I wore my new favorite denim jacket- a pink leopard print & pink studded jacket that I made for Praise Youth Design (as well as the Glory Daze graphic t which can be found in the store). Here are some more pictures:

New York Fashion Week is over, and I've collected a few of my favorites from the past week. The weirdest thing has been trying to marry my old love of over-the-top-crazy with my new love for minimal, chic looks. See how I did below...

I can never NOT enjoy a Betsey Johnson show. This one especially got me with the studs, chains, faux-undercuts and lightning bolt earrings; and I can't forget the leopard print and ultra-slouchy thin-knit sweaters. Betsey never fails to impress me.

Black and white. Minimal yet grunge. Leather and silk. That's why I like Wayne's Spring 2012 collection.

Yep, you've got it; more minimalism. But with pastels! The cigarette pants, oversize blazers and breezy tops give this 'lady' look a bit more edge.

Even with all the draping, somehow you could still call this Y-3 collection "minimal". I like that the shapes are a little bit 'off', they're soft yet sporty. There's lots of flannels and sheer pieces in this collection as well if you go check out all the looks.

I think Nicholas K was my favorite collection from New York. Layers upon layers upon layers; black & grey & leather! This is definitely a rock n' roll collection for the more sophisticated set. If I could just have this entire collection in my closet, I would be really happy.

You might not be able to get it from my posts, but I've been getting really into minimalism lately.

It may have started a few months back when for my birthday my dad and step-mom bought me a really pretty necklace with a square pendant- I had been looking for interesting & unique jewelery and this was the first time I had seen something that wasn't round or asymmetrical. Then just recently when I was at Bumbershoot music festival in Seattle this past weekend I found an amazing silver ring; about half an inch wide, natural silver color and flat all around. I love it! And now I want to add more minimal fashion items to my collection...

I searched "casual draped black dress" on google and this is what I came up with. It's Vivienne Westwood, so there's no chance of me getting this one. But a girl can dream, can't she?

I really love how this dress could work really well for night or be perfect for day, depending on the fabric its made of. The sleeves are great too.

My plan is to search some thrift stores for a draped black dress or a slightly oversize dress and tailoring it to fit me. I'm psyched, I love thrift hunts!

I finished my summer job yesterday, so I decided to take the plunge and dye my hair pink as soon as I got home from work since I didn't know when I would have the chance to do it again... My next job starts the day after labour day so it should be pretty much faded out by then. I love it! I wish I could keep it for longer but the kind of work I do doesn't really appreciate fun hair colors...

Today I went downtown with some friends for lunch and gelato. Here's what I wore:

This past weekend was a HOT one in Vancouver. Saturday was the hottest day we've had all summer (but not very hot by east coast standards...) and I was definitely feeling it. My friend Jazzy and I went to Granville Island to window shop, walk along the water and enjoy the outdoors. Later that night I went to go see a ballgame with some of my friends and we had a FANTASTIC time. It's such a great way to spend a summer night!

summer! yesterday i wore this when i was out and about around town. i went to check out my friends garage sale and have a beer, and then went to a production meeting for the theatre company i do marketing and publicity for. then i headed out with some friends from college to see a burlesque show.

this summer has been pretty fun... but after doing catering at a baseball stadium for the past few months and eating (free) hotdogs and burgers every shift, i've realized its time to start doing something about the extra weight i'm carrying around. i by no means have a negative view of my body, but i would like to actually feel healthy and fit. while i feel fine in a bathing suit, i want to feel uber-confident!

today, it was brilliantly sunny in vancouver. i went to the beach for a few hours, which was busy but not too crowded. perfect to suntan, read a book and chill out for a couple of hours.

the below pictures were taken in my landlords backyard. i only went back there for the first time a few months ago, and i was pretty amazed by how nice it is! there's a winding staircase up to the deck, and even a little pond. they went away for a week so i decided to take advantage and take some photos...

Since I wore that polka dot pencil skirt the other day I've been thinking non-stop about getting into some more pencil skirts. I have a few pairs back when I was really into that look but I could use a few more- luckily they are usually easy to find at the thrift store.

I'm trying to stop falling back into the old jeans + t-shirt routine, and I think this fall pencil skirts; whether high waisted, just above the knee or below the knee will be a good addition to my closet. I love how they can look totally chic and put together on anyone!

I really could keep going and going on pencil skirt images, there are so many great ways to put them into outfits!

Retro Rock Polka Dot

Last night I pulled my polka dot pencil skirt out of the back of my closet and wore it for the first time in years. and I love this outfit! I used to be way into the retro look, not so much anymore but I love how this has that retro vibe while still being rock n roll.

I went to a heavy metal rock show downtown Vancouver. My friend's cousin and boyfriend are both in the band and it was an industry showcase night so it was HUGE for them. They were so amazing too! These shoes were definitely good for stomping.

I always love going out for drinks in the middle of the week- well for me last night was really the end of my workweek, and for my friend Amanda it was the middle of hers. We had a few drinks, had a few laughs, did some shopping downtown (she suggested it, how could I say no?).

We went to Moxies for dinner and drinks and later on in the night we went to Earls for dessert (and another drink. yay!)

Today! I went to Costco and pre-ordered a cake for my birthday next week (chocolate cake + chocolate icing mm!) and then went to my dads place and watched THE CANUCKS BEAT THE BRUINS! YEAH! It was such a great game, too. We ordered in pizza and drank some Corona's.

My idea is to have a tattoo based on the old west and western movies (i love westerns!!) in the style of the tattoos below. i like the idea of a face with different images popping out from around it.

Yesterday it was finally SUNNY in Vancouver! The sun comes out once in awhile and then it ends up raining for days afterwards. Everyone here keeps commenting on how long its taking for summer to come around; its awful! We need more than one day of sunshine STAT!

nowadays it seems like whenever i leave the house the sky decides to open up and pour buckets on me. which sucks because lately i've been going downtown alot to run errands, hang with friends, enjoy life etc etc... and that involves alot of walking around the city. luckily today wasnt as WINDY as it was the other day- megawind + rain = messy haired runny nosed me.

so basically today i went downtown to do a bit of shopping, look into a potential new job and do some work for the theatre company im interning with. i was heading to american apparel to buy their oversize burn-out tee, and i stopped in to h&m and found a super similar one for half the price! so i ended up getting one in black and one in hot pink. i love finding bargains like that, and now i have two instead of one!

as you can see there are a lot of ROOTS on my head. thats because im growing my hair out. i'm not sure if im going to do the slow+painful half-head thing, or possibly add in some golden blonde+light brown streaks so its not so harsh. i'll probably put some streaks in because im getting a bit tired of the plain blonde!

its from patti smith's song "dancing barefoot". i got it done yesterday in downtown vancouver at NEXT, my tatto artist was marta.

i went with my friend amanda, her appointment was right after mine and it was her first tattoo. i think that she is insane because she said it didnt hurt ONE BIT. she got some pretty big/bold roman numerals on her left wrist, and she didnt even flinch. mine didnt hurt too bad, there were a couple spots where i was wincing but nothing awful.

i like the fact that i can keep it hidden, and i didnt plan on buying anything new at all to wear that would display it... but now that ive got it i really want to show it off!

all 3 of the above tops are from urban outfitters. i really like the first one, i think im going to go scrummaging for some see through fabric tomorrow and re-work a shirt i already have. im not that into one-shouldered tops but i may find one i like somewhere..... and im pretty sure alot of the shirts i got to wear last summer are super sheer so you should be able to see through them to get a glimpse of the tat. :D

yesterday was such a crazy day, and i wish that i took a picture of my outfit cause i really liked it! i was wearing black skinny jeans, camel t-shirt, xtra long brown cardigan, gold gun necklace, and a rose/camel floral scarf. i woke up at 6am to go do a quick trial shift for a possible new job, came home for an hour and then went downtown with my mom to have coffee with my aunt/uncle/cousin who just came in from toronto. coffee turned into a whole day thing and we were all over downtown, and my other uncle and my OTHER uncle and cousin came to meet up, and by then it was 7:30pm and almost time to go meet my friends for dinner, and then we went to see scream 4. it was about 1am when i got home and i was definetly DONE for the night.

today i went to do some errands for the theatre company im interning with, and then went to grab lunch. came home for a bit and then went to value village, and now im back... im wiped.

I do however know that I need to get myself a mesh top! I found a very similar one at American Apparel:

I like the looseness of it, I don't think I could pull off the tight sheer/mesh dress they have at AA. I definetly don't think I'll be rocking the braless look with it, but I think its a versatile look for the summer. I already have a long sheer cream lace tank I've been wearing under flowly tops. This top would look perfect with a tight black tank underneath...

Anyone seen any other sheer/mesh tops around? Or is AA my best bet?

This was my outfit this past Saturday. Went to a christening for my cousin's baby girl, and then later that night went to see an amazing punk rock play called 'Hard Core Logo: Live'.

Obviously I used my webcam for these pics- sometimes i find it takes so much effort to take even one or two good photos with my digital camera. I'm a bit frustrated with it. Its fine for anything else but when it comes to taking pictures of myself, placing the camera in the right spot, getting the right lighting, making sure the pictures dont turn out all blurry... argh! I much prefer those photos to the webcam ones though.

I apologize for the extreme lack of posts these past few months! I was back in school in September, as well as working anywhere from 20 to 30 hours a week, and it felt insane. I didn't have enough time to think about the blog or the desire to post.

But, I'm not going back to school this coming term so I should have time to post once in awhile!

Decided to do a 'teen witch' thing. Usually wouldn't wear something like this but I love the outfit! Layered and super comfortable. I went downtown to do some boxing day shopping with my friend Amanda from high school. Then we went to see a performance of various peices of music/poetry my friend Andrea from theatre school was a part of. It was actually put on by her uncle as a thank you to all of their relatives who are so hospitible during the Christmas season. After that we went out for a late Chinese dinner with a large group of Andrea's family, the musicians from the show and some of Andrea's Uncle's friends. We took up four giant tables! It's kind of a treat when you don't have to order anything and they just bring out tray after tray of delicious food (duck crepe, crab and lobster, fried fish, sweet and sour pork, etc etc.)

While we were shopping I totally scored both a Wildfox tee and a Coco De Couer shirt (Audrey Kitching's clothing line) both of which I had been drooling over for awhile online. I don't think I could stand to pay the regular price but boxing day sales help that!

i was getting so sick of all the all-white, 'pretty' collections permeating the runway for spring 2011, but along comes Balmain to put a grin on my face. yes it's a little bit predictable- not his best, but its exactly what i need to feed my punk rock sensabilities. it definetly looks like a cross between isabel marant and diesel gold- but hey, i'm not complaining. its more inspiration for me when i try to re-create these looks myself!

any collections you've been eyeing for spring 2011? anything you would recommend to me? i love finding out about awesome lesser-known labels i haven't heard of.

DIY Chain Boots!

I bought these black boots a couple weeks ago and was going to wear them as is, but after awhile I thought they looked pretty boring. So I decided to buy some chain and do something a bit interesting.

From bland and boring...

...to blinged out! (...it's the best I could do.) Here's the outside...

and the inside...

The shoes are from Wal-Mart and the chains are from a store in Vancouver called the i-Found gallery (on Main Street). It's a really awesome store, full of antique jewelery, charms and pendants. I have made a few custom necklaces there already. They also sell tons of different types of chain by the foot, which is where I got the chain for this DIY project. I know you can also buy chain on ebay, and another way to get chain is to go to a cheap-o clothing store and check out the necklace selection. I just grabbed a couple tools from my closet to pry open the chain where I wanted to attach it to another strand, and after a bit of finegalling I got everything where I wanted it to go.

I'm really happy with how they turned out! This is definetly an easy project that anyone can do.

i'll admit, I usually loathe when people wear all-jean outfits. especially when it's a matching wash (or even when its a different wash? either way, i hate it). maybe i lost my sense of taste but i kinda thought that this outfit looked good. and i still do!

i got the idea for the jean shirt from The Beckerman Sisters (featured a few posts back). I "painted" the front and back of the shirt with bleach (not diluted with water) and skipped the sleeves, hems and the top back of the shirt. then i dunked the shirt in a mix of bleach and water for a few hours which made the painted-bleached parts super white and the rest a faded blue.

the Beckerman Sisters seem to be some of the most eccentric fashionistas out there today, in my opinion. I love the fact that they are willing to take risks and be the center of attention. The Beckerman Sisters are comprised of Callianne, Chloe and Samantha, and they have a fashion line which you can find here- but I highly recomend you check out their fashion blog where they post photos of their outfits and travels. What I Wore yesterday. Went to see a play and ate at a new place in Gastown I've wanted to go to for awhile- Acme Cafe. It's pretty awesome; it's kind of like an old school diner with all of your 'home cooked' favourites, but even more delicious.

i've had quite a whirl-wind week and a half. at the end of seattle i went to seattle for a couple days; firstly to see THE DEAD WEATHER perform at the Capitol Hill Block Party (they were awesome); secondly to do some shopping (and shopping i did!). the day after i got back i headed to Penticton with my dad, my stepmom and my brother. Penticton is about 4 hours east of Vancouver, and we spent our 4 days there lying on the beach, eating ice cream, playing mini golf etc etc.. typical family vacation, and it was really fun. after THAT, i went to Victoria with my mom. you can check out one of my outfits below:

If you have been following my past style star posts (liu wen, erin wasson, kate lanphear) you will see a bit of a trend. that monochromatic rock chik look is all A's with me right now. I think that Freja Beha Erichsen is the epitome of that. I love the fact that she can make an all black outfit stand out in a unique way every time. And hey, she's not adverse to throwing in some grey or white every once in awhile! plus she has a really sweet shaggy haircut that I want.

Today I went to the beach for the second time this summer to try and even-out my sunburn/random white patches/fake tan. Luckily I remembered to put on SPF all over and didn't get burnt at all this time. Hoorah!

I also did some thrift shopping with my friend Shafina. She is going away to India for a year and I'm going to miss her! When we were parking her car we pulled up right behind a Pontiac PARISIENNE. Today I went to the hospital with my mom to visit my Grandma (nothing serious, she's doing well and hopefully will be home soon) and went to Capilano Mall to grab some stuff from Wal-Mart. I bought a giant mens button-down shirt for $8, so I'm hoping to turn it into a asymmetrical shirt- let's see what happens...

I absolutely love the dress that I wore today! The cut is amazing and it totally shows off my waist (at least that's what my mother says). The print is really unusual too- its got pink and purple florals as well as CLOCKS. So weird!

it's inevitable, whenever the august 'back to school' issues of magazines come out, i start to plan my fall wardrobe. it's the middle of summer yet i can't help thinking about sweaters and boots! i'm even more gung-ho since i'm going back to school (part time) for the first time in 2 years. i always get excited about buying a new bookbag and notebooks and pens and pencils (that excitement goes away once the actual studying starts...).

so i was super pumped to see this 'school house rock' spread in the august issue of Teen Vogue. I love rockabilly style editorials so this spread is a dream!

liu wen. i love her style. she has embraced that rocker-chic look i adore. there is something about her that is completely classic (the camel trench, the pin straight hair) that somehow works perfectly with her combat boots and ripped jeans. she sticks with a 'uniform' of skinnies and blazers but it's always unique and different each time. i love the thrown together attitude!

Yesterday I started to work on a new show- it's called The Soap Show and it's going to be a live, improvised soap opera. I saw the cast working for the first time and I have no doubt that it's going to be amazing. I've always hated doing improv- I don't like being put on the spot (plus in high school no one ever has any clever ideas, really) but these guys and gals were incredible. I love how they can create an entire scenario/relationship/plot in a split second with no discussion. Safe to say I was laughing my ass off! annnnd here's what i wore:

Last night the show I was working on finally opened, which means less stress! Everything went well, so the show should run smoothly for the next week and a half. There was an opening night party after the show, and people couldn't seem to get enough of my heels. A lady who I don't know came up to me and told me she and the group of people she was with were talking about how fabulous my shoes are! Little did they know, I got them at Wal-Mart... oh, fashion.

I absolutely love this dress though. I always though that I couldn't wear wrap dresses for some reason, but I was wrong... it's the perfect dress that can be dressed up or dressed down, and its made of a super soft jersey-ish fabric. And it definetly shows off the cleavage!

I am super happy with my decision to go blonde- right now its a bit orange-y so in the next few weeks I'll slowly be going blonder. I'm not sure if I want to go for a white-blonde or more of a straw-blonde. we'll see what happens...

went to a big double birthday last night for my cousin and uncle who turned 30 and 60 respectivly... all of my aunts and uncles were there, and some of my cousins were there (i have about 13 on my dad's side). i hadn't seen any of them in almost 8 years (for reasons it would take way too long to explain here!!) so it was really great to see them all again- especially cause my dad's side of the family really knows how to party! here's what i was wearing:

leopard shirt - thrifted / pink cardigan - thrifted / tank top - sirens /

jeans - primark / necklace - sirens / shoes - nine west

I can't believe I'm even thinking about spring/summer yet, but it's hard not to when there are so many pretty things to look at... here's my wishlist for this spring!

I've already got my diy studded jean vest, my diy bleached jean jacket and diy pink fringed shirt (i'm doin good!); i'll have to do some thrifting and see if i can't put the rest of this together.

Betsey Johnson's Spring 2008 collection still has to be one of my absolute favourites. I did a blog post about it a few years ago- I wanted one of these dresses then, and I want one now! I think I'd just like to live in Betsey Johnson's mind for a day and see what goes on in there...

So I decided to just 'go for it' and bleach/dye my hair blonde!

I used Manic Panic Flash Lightening 30 kit, and then used Loreal in a medium ash blonde shade. I'm really happy with it, but I'm only halfway there... in a week or two I think I'll bleach it again to get a more 'true' blonde shade. all in all I'm so glad I did it!

THE D.I.Y. FAUX-UNDERCUT

YOU WILL NEED:
-one small hair elastic
-some hair clips/bobby pins
-hairspray or smoothing cream
-if you want to do wavy hair, you need hair elastics to hold braids

DO IT YOURSELF:
1. wash your hair.

2. make a deep side-part in your hairline. I did one above the arch of my left eyebrow.

3. if you want to do alice dellal style waves, dry your hair until it is almost completely dry, just a tiny bit damp. you may want to put in some volumizer or hair styling cream. otherwise, dry your hair completely straight or however you want to do it.

4. go to the faux 'undercut' side of your head. grab a small amount of hair from the front, not too much. pull it back and twist around, put into a small hair elastic. pin to the side of your head near the back. don't worry about making that side super smooth/shaved looking yet...

5. for the waves, put your hair into braids. my hair is layered so i put it into 3 different braids. leave to dry for about 30 minutes, shorter or longer depending on how wavy you want your hair to be. i don't braid the 'undercut' part, so it stays smooth.

6. take out your braids. if your hair isn't totally dry yet you can grab a hair dryer and blast your head, or let air dry until completely dry.

7. go back to the faux 'undercut' side of your head. now that your hair is dry and wavy you may want to adjust that side a bit- pull the hair back as tight as possible- don't worry about any whispy bits that stick out. keep the hair elastic in, and get your bobby pins or hair clips and clip over the elastic to hide it and hold that part of the hair back.

8. because of my layered hair, i always have little bits of hair that stick out. i used hairspray to smooth out the 'undercut' side to give it a shaved look.

i'm really happy with how it turned out! this was my first time trying it out, so i think next time i'll pull my hair even farther back, maybe pin it underneath the hair on the back of my head and slick it down a bit more so the 'undercut' is even more intense. this d.i.y. will change and evolve. let me know if you try it yourself!

a 'real' undercut would look way cooler, but this is a good way to try it out and see if it suits. i'm thinking about even doing cornrows or something like that. not sure if i want the shaved head commitment!

undercutting it

recently i've become obsessed with undercuts (kind of like my obsession with side braids...). i blame alice dellal and cassie. but mostly alice dellal.

i definetly think that i have the guts to do it, it's mostly about making the commitment to having a half-shaved head and then the painful process of growing it back out at some point.

i think i'm going to try a faux-undercut, a la Issa's fall 09 runway show, which was actually inspired by alice dellal, who walked in the show. they did a really deep side-part on the models and then slicked back the other half of their hair to imitate alice's locks. even if you have no interest in shaving your head, i think what they did is such a cool idea!

my pink hair + some inspiration

I finally did it- I streaked my hair pink! I've had pink hair dye in my bathroom for almost 2 years and never used it. Finally decided to take the plunge. I'm so happy with how it turned out! I wanted it to blend in with the rest of my hair so I pinned up the top layer and just put streaks on the bottom layers. It blends really nicely and looks great when my hair moves.

Here are some other hairstyles/colors that are inspiring me right now:

You Will Need:

White Shoes
Fabric Paint in varying colors (I used gold, hot pink and black)
Studs, gems, sequins, or some other detail
Superglue/Hot Glue/Thread and Needle (to put your detail onto the shoe- I used superglue)
Paintbrushes
Shoelaces! or ribbon (something I don't yet have...)

Do It Yourself:

1. Paint your shoes where you want them painted.

2. Grab your details. In this case, studs from spikesandleather.com

3. Adheare them onto your shoes where you want them. I used superglue because it's stronger than using a hot glue gun.

4. Enjoy your awesome new shoes! And don't forget to get some shoelaces at some point...
